Our Newest 'Green' Dunkin' Donuts
“The opening of Dunkin’ Donuts’ second ‘green’ restaurant in St. Petersburg demonstrates our continued commitment to serving our communities and the environment,” said Nigel Travis, CEO of Dunkin’ Brands and President of Dunkin’ Donuts.
CONTINUING OUR COMMITMENT TO SUSTAINABLE BUILDING
Dunkin' Donuts has opened its newest “green” restaurant in St. Petersburg at 1046 4th Street North. It is the second “green” Dunkin’ Donuts restaurant in St. Petersburg to feature internal and external elements which will increase energy efficiency and minimize its impact on the environment. The franchisee, Aziz and Company, opened Dunkin’ Donuts’ first “green” restaurant in 2008 and achieved Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Silver certification in 2010. Aziz and Company has also applied to the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) for the (LEED) Silver or higher certification for the new St. Petersburg location.
Some “Green” highlights of this new restaurant include:
- Dunkin’ Donuts’ first ever electric car charging station.
- Energy-efficient insulated concrete foam walls to reduce heating and air conditioning usage.
- Energy-efficient LED lighting and a state of the art energy monitoring system.
- Super low-flow or no-flow fixtures and aerators, and a rainwater harvesting system for landscape irrigation, which make the building over 30% more water efficient than a typical restaurant.
- Highly reflective and permeable hardscapes and roofing materials that reduce the heat-island effect and improve comfort in and around the building.
- A reusable mug program to encourage guests to bring their own mug, which can be refilled for a discounted price.
- Paper cups for hot beverages.
- A food donation program, through which leftover baked goods are donated to the Suncoast Haven of Rest Rescue Mission.
- Coffee grounds composting in partnership with local urban farmers, who use the spent coffee grounds for soil improvement.
Many of the features from our LEED certified projects have been incorporated into our building specifications and are now standard in all of our new US stores, including low-flow faucets, LED illuminated signage, insulated glass and more.
